Going into freshman year is scary, and if you’re planning on rushing a sorority, your fear of beginning freshman year begins a week early.  Here is a list of several beneficial things to consider when jumping right into rush at 4 a.m. on that first Monday morning.

  1. Yes, 4 a.m. Monday morning. If you plan on finding an open shower every morning before beginning each day, it’s important to know that every other freshman girl in the dorms has that same idea too. Get up early enough to find an open shower or at least give yourself enough time to wait for an available one.

  2. Each morning you should make sure that your “emergency rush purse” is filled with all your valuables. These valuables should include gum for between rounds so your breath doesn’t scare anyone off, a handheld fan (it gets much too hot), deodorant to help with sweating (putting it on the back of your neck prevents sweating), chapstick because the sun is terrible, oil wipes to absorb the sweat off your beautifully done makeup and water to stay hydrated.

  3. If you’re standing in the mirror admiring your perfect outfit with your cutest pair of wedges, take them off and re-evaluate. You are going to walk miles each day (or at least it feels like it) up and down Milledge Avenue and the last thing you want to be, is in pain.

  4. Many myths of rush lead you to believe that you should wear pearls and Lilly Pulitzer, or to wear clothes that support your school. Truth be told, pearls and Lilly Pulitzer are trying too hard, and we know that you love your school, so that won’t be necessary.  Wear clothes that represent your personality so that you and the sororities can see the best representation of yourself.

  5. When going into rush, try to have the most unbiased opinion about every sorority that you can. The most important thing is to have a clear mind because having heard someone else’s opinion may not allow you the opportunity to see it through your own perspective.

Sorority rush is meant to be fun and an exciting beginning to your freshman year.  Although it may seem scary, if you follow these five tips to rush, you’ll be able to get the most out of your experience and make the most fitting choice for you.
